Unbundled or limited legal services means that you hire a lawyer to do a specific task(s). For example:

  1. 1Legal advice on legal options and alternatives

  2. 2Evaluation of client’s legal rights

  3. 3Conduct legal research and analysis

  4. 4Drafting and/or suggesting documents to be prepared

  5. 5Draft and/or review agreements

  6. 6Negotiate a settlement

  7. 7Draft letter

  8. 8Review correspondence and court documents

  9. 9Evaluate settlement options

  10. 10Other services as needed by the client

By contrast, in “traditional representation,” you hire a lawyer to do whatever legal services he/she thinks are appropriate for your situation.

Unbundled Legal Services FAQ

Q. What is the difference between unbundled legal services and traditional legal services?

Using unbundled legal services, the lawyer and client agree what specific legal services the lawyer will provide. Limited tasks, not full representation, are the requested service. The specific service(s) is listed in a written agreement that also describes the fees to be paid.

With traditional service, the lawyer provides comprehensive legal services from commencement to conclusion of the matter.

Q. Why would a client seek unbundled legal services?

Allows an individual or business access to expert legal counsel for a significantly reduced fee.

Q. What is “limited representation?”

“Limited representation” is unbundled services for a court hearing. That is, under a “limited representation,” the lawyer agrees to go to represent a client for a single court hearing. In traditional representation for litigation, the lawyer is hired to handle all court hearings (and all court paperwork) for the cases.

Q. How do I know what legal services I need?

Your lawyer can advise you, based on the situation and your goals. What you need may be a legal opinion on your employment law questions, a single letter to a business association or it may be the complex functions required in collaborative practice.
